DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Project Based Learning for Wahkiakum School District\n(private event for Wahkiakum School District) \nThis foundational workshop is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge to design\, assess and manage rigorous\, relevant\, standards-based project-based learning (PBL) units. The 2.5-day intensive workshop is a balance of direct instruction\, hands-on work\, resource sharing and peer collaboration and review. Participants are actively engaged in project design\, with the expectation that every teacher or teaching team will develop or adapt a project plan that is ready to implement in the 2022/23 school year. The institute will have a focus on place-based STEM PBL\, but teachers of all content areas are encouraged to attend. \nInstitute Outcomes: \n\nUnderstand the PBL framework for project design.\nCreate a standards-based project design\, including 21st century competencies\, career-related learning\, and a publicly presentable student product focused around a driving question.\nIncorporate instructional best practices along with formative and summative assessment into project designs and project plans.\nUnderstand project management tools and plan for integration into managing a PBL in the classroom.\n\nParticipants who attend all three sessions will receive: \n\n15 Washington state approved STEM clock hours\na $250 stipend for attending on June 16 (from district)

In situations where social distancing is not possible during outdoor sessions\, masks are highly encouraged. If the venue or facility has stricter policies\, PEI will abide by those policies. You will tour the facilities at Wahkiakum School District and experience examples of how different content areas can include outdoor activities in the garden and/or the school forest. You will have time to look for areas where salmon can be incorporated into your curriculum.\nSession 2: August 11\, 10 AM to 2:30 PM – a four-hour experience at the Lake Aberdeen Hatchery\, including a guided tour of the facility (if open)\, a guest speaker\, and a field investigation at the adjacent stream.\n\nParticipants who attend both days will receive: \n\n6 Washington State Approved STEM clock hours\nA $75 participation stipend\n\nNote: This workshop is open to all public school teachers in Grays Harbor County. We have 20 “seats” available. PEI and the Hatchery will be following the CDC’s guidelines for groups: all participants will have to wear a mask and practice social distancing.

DESCRIPTION:Healthy Oceans\, Healthy You: Field Session – Sandy Intertidal\n(by invitation only) \nThe “Healthy Oceans\, Healthy You” field session is a six-hour\, in-person follow-up to last year’s virtual Ocean Science Workshop\, co-facilitated with the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary.  We will explore some of the benefits outlined in the Sanctuary’s new ELA performance task called “Ocean Benefits.”  In this workshop you will perform an investigation of intertidal invertebrates\, learn from community partners\, spend some time reflecting on and recording your observations of the beach environment\, and participating in a short stewardship experience. \nThis workshop is for third through sixth grade public school teachers.  You are welcome to join us even if you missed last year’s workshop. \nWe will be conducting the entire workshop outdoors* but participants will be required to follow the CDC guidelines for group events: wearing a face mask that covers nose and mouth and maintaining a six-foot distance from other participants. \nParticipants who attend the full session will receive: \n\n6 WA State Approved STEM Clock Hours\nA tool kit from the OCNMS\nA $100 participation stipend\n\n*Please note: The field session will take place on the coast of Grays Harbor County. The exact address of the field session site will be provided in an email prior to the workshop.

SUMMARY:FieldSTEM Forest Institute - Integrating Forest Education Across Content Areas
DESCRIPTION:The Forest FieldSTEM® Institute will support the integration of forest education\, forest sites\, and community partners in the delivery of education standards. Teachers will leave the workshop with an implementation plan supported by grade level appropriate resources\, 18 STEM clock hours and participation and implementation stipends totaling $300. \n  \nThe workshop will be appropriate for K-12 teachers with grade band breakouts in the classroom\, in the field\, and across content areas and will have grade level planning sessions for secondary teams\, and grade band teams for  elementary. \n  \nWe will be approaching the content from a scientific point of view\, but we will provide examples of integration and cross-content areas and include collaborative planning time throughout the workshop. \nInterested?
