DESCRIPTION:Solutions Oriented Learning Storylines: Wildfires and Forest Management with ESD 113\n\nSaturday\, October 1\, 2022\, 9 AM to 3:30 PM \nMeyer’s Point Environmental Field Station\, Olympia\, WA \nAttention formal K-8 educators from schools and districts in the ESD 113 region! \nJoin Pacific Education Institute (PEI) and our ClimeTime partners to take a deep dive into the ecology of wildfires and climate change\, focusing on the South Sound region. Participants will learn about the Solutions Oriented Learning Storyline format\, designed around six guiding principles: Indigenous perspectives\, local anchoring phenomena\, culturally responsive instructional practices\, NGSS three-dimensional student growth measures\, and a solutions-oriented approach to managing forests as a climate change mitigation strategy. Participants will also explore carbon drawdown relating to forest management to support opportunities for elevating student voice in the classroom. \nThis in-person opportunity will be held at the Meyer’s Point Environmental Field Station in Olympia.* \nParticipants who attend the whole session will receive: \n\n6 Washington state approved STEM clock hours\nThe opportunity to earn a $200 implementation stipend\n\n*Additional location details to follow via email. DESCRIPTION:Solutions Oriented Learning Storylines: Coastal Wetlands\nOlympia\, WA \nTuesday\, August 16\, 2022\, 9 AM to 3:30 PM \nJoin Pacific Education Institute (PEI) and our ClimeTime partners to take a deep dive into the ecology of coastal wetlands\, focusing on the South Sound region. Participants will learn about the Solutions Oriented Learning Storyline format\, designed around six guiding principles: Indigenous perspectives\, local anchoring phenomena\, culturally responsive instructional practices\, NGSS three-dimensional student growth measures\, and a solutions-oriented approach to addressing coastal hazards\, and opportunities to elevate student voices in their communities. \nThis in-person opportunity will be held at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge in Olympia.* This opportunity is for formal K-12 educators from the following schools and districts: \n\nSteilacoom\, Bethel\, Clover Park\, Wa He Lut Indian School\nPlus all school districts in the ESD 113 region\n\nParticipants who attend the entire session will receive: \n\n6 Washington State approved STEM Clock Hours \nThe opportunity to earn a $200 implementation stipend\n\n*Additional location details to follow via email for those who register. Washington is being invaded! Join Pacific Education Institute and the Washington Invasive Species Council for a deep dive into a state-wide project that empowers students to become “first detectors” in identifying and reporting invasive species in their schoolyards and communities. \nIn this engaging IN-PERSON* and MINIMAL SCREEN workshop\, we will introduce formal educators of grades 3 through 8 to the free Washington Pest Watch curriculum and model the use of these resources to design meaningful learning experiences for students. You will be motivated to get your students outside and join the hunt for some of Washington’s most notorious invaders! \nParticipants will receive: \n\n4 Washington State approved STEM clock hours\nA $50 participation stipend\n\n*Please Note: this workshop will be held in-person only at Tolmie State Park in Olympia. This is a state park which requires a Discover Pass to park on site. You must have a Discover Pass for your vehicle or be willing to carpool with someone who does. You can purchase a Discover pass for the day for $11.50 or an annual pass for $35. DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning about the role forests play in climate change?  \nDo you want to know how hands-on learning can increase student engagement across content areas?  \nJoin PEI Faculty\, Karen Lippy\, to learn skills and activities on the topic of Forests and Climate Change\, as required by the Next Generation Science Standards. The “Teaching with i-Tree” Unit from Project Learning Tree (PLT) will be used to provide participants with hands-on activities that help middle and high school students discover and analyze the many ecosystem services trees provide.
