DESCRIPTION:FieldSTEM in the Garden for Wahkiakum School District\n(for Wahkiakum School District educators only) \nAttention K-12 Formal and Para-Educators! \nThis FieldSTEM in the Garden workshop is the launching point for a series of workshops through the school year to support you in utilizing the school gardens and forest in teaching multiple subjects to your students.  \nIn this in-person* workshop\, you will identify what motivates you to be an innovative and engaged instructor\, and use that knowledge to find ways to incorporate high-impact field experiences into your teaching. You will tour the facilities at Wahkiakum School District and experience examples of how different content areas can include outdoor activities in the garden and/or the school forest. You will also have the opportunity to learn how your local WSU Extension Office can support you through the various programs they offer. \nParticipants who attend all day will be eligible to receive 6 Washington State Approved STEM clock hours. \n*PEI will be following these COVID-19 guidelines: Everyone is expected to wear masks and practice social distancing when indoors. In situations where social distancing is not possible during outdoor sessions\, masks are highly encouraged. If the venue or facility has stricter policies\, PEI will abide by those policies. DESCRIPTION:Solutions Oriented Learning Storyline: Regenerative Agriculture Writing Workshop (Western WA)\n(By invitation only) \nPEI is looking for a small team of educators with expertise in writing and a willingness to strengthen their understanding and skills in curriculum development\, climate science solutions\, instructional best practices; including formative assessment\, teacher professional development\, Tribal\, rural\, bilingual and migrant education. The project will be rooted in rigorous science education while linking to local questions\, problems\, issues and opportunities to engage students that historically have been underserved in science. \nThree-dimensional storylines with anchoring phenomena\, formative assessments and 7E (engage\, explore\, ecosystem\, elders\, explain -students explain not sages on stages -expand\, and evaluate) activities that build towards performance expectations to ensure 3-dimensional NGSS instruction is taught\, with assessments/rubrics to help teachers determine student growth. The storylines will build student understanding and problem solving around local environmental challenges related to food and food sovereignty\, land use and management\, agriculture\, aquaculture\, forestry\, land management and renewable energy. \nOur project intends to provide educators with classroom instructional tools and professional development to effectively teach climate science through storylines. We are focusing the work on six important anchors:  \n\nStrategies to work with local tribes to center Indigenous ways of knowing; \n3-D NGSS assessment tools to demonstrate student growth; \nStrategies and tools for formative assessment to strengthen inclusive teacher instruction for all learners; \nLocally\, relevant\, place-based topics; \nLessons to calculate and implement solutions to draw down greenhouse gases and\, \nStrategies to elevate student voice.\n\nParticipants who attend all sessions and complete all work will receive:\n\n\n10.5 Washington State Approved STEM clock hours\nA $750 participation stipend

DESCRIPTION:FieldSTEM: Meaningful Math Performance Tasks\nAttention formal Washington state K-12 educators! \nDuring the course of this workshop\, participants will experience PEI Math Performance Task topics that engage students with relevant\, scenario-based\, career connected challenges. These tasks aim to broaden outdoor life experiences and deepen connection to scientific thinking through the lens of mathematics. \nThese *brand new* PEI Math Performance Tasks follow the Smarter Balanced performance task sequence\, and are designed to be implemented in classroom settings to provide students the opportunity to explore real-world\, Washington State examples. \nPEI Math Performance Tasks reinforce student understanding through observation and application of mathematical skills for problem solving. Students’ learning is also extended by various sources and potential field investigations aligned with the NGSS embedded in the common core math practices. \nWe are specifically looking for educators willing to implement and provide feedback on these Math Performance Tasks. Educators who register should expect to provide feedback to support the process of moving these Math Performance Tasks to the next phase of publication. \nParticipants who attend\, complete the three hour virtual workshop\, and provide feedback will receive: \n\n$50 participation stipend\n3 Washington State Approved STEM clock hours\n\nThere is an opportunity to earn an additional $75 implementation stipend.
