Participants will learn about the Solutions Oriented Learning Storyline format\, which includes: Indigenous connections\, local anchoring phenomena\, culturally responsive practices\, NGSS three-dimensional student growth measures\, and a solutions-oriented approach to drawing down greenhouse gases with opportunities to elevate student voices in their communities. \nThis workshop is an asynchronous course that includes seven self-paced modules on Google Classroom\, and access to a PEI Regional FieldSTEM Coordinator for help during the course.  \nParticipants who complete all modules within one month from the start date will receive 6 Washington State approved STEM clock hours.

DESCRIPTION:FieldSTEM: Meaningful Math Performance Tasks\nAttention formal Washington state K-12 educators! \nDuring the course of this workshop\, participants will experience PEI Math Performance Task topics that engage students with relevant\, scenario-based\, career connected challenges. These tasks aim to broaden outdoor life experiences and deepen connection to scientific thinking through the lens of mathematics. \nThese *brand new* PEI Math Performance Tasks follow the Smarter Balanced performance task sequence\, and are designed to be implemented in classroom settings to provide students the opportunity to explore real-world\, Washington State examples. \nPEI Math Performance Tasks reinforce student understanding through observation and application of mathematical skills for problem solving. Students’ learning is also extended by various sources and potential field investigations aligned with the NGSS embedded in the common core math practices. \nWe are specifically looking for educators willing to implement and provide feedback on these Math Performance Tasks. Educators who register should expect to provide feedback to support the process of moving these Math Performance Tasks to the next phase of publication. \nParticipants who attend\, complete the three hour virtual workshop\, and provide feedback will receive: \n\n$50 participation stipend\n3 Washington State Approved STEM clock hours\n\nThere is an opportunity to earn an additional $75 implementation stipend. This online workshop is geared toward CTE and Science educators of grades 9 through 12 and middle school instructors offering forestry-related classes. \nThe workshop will be an overview and update session for CTE Forest Management and related frameworks created in partnership with local Washington educators and professionals in the forest management industry. This newly approved course is an equivalency for HS science and available for district adoption.  \nForest management professionals will share information on their roles and career pathways and engage in a discussion with educators about student worksite visits and SAE models. \nParticipants who attend will receive: \n\nA $75 participation stipend\n2 Washington State approved STEM clock hours\n\nPlease note: you must be a formal Washington state secondary educator of grades 6-12 to attend.

DESCRIPTION:Solutions Oriented Learning Storylines: Urban Forestry Writing Workshop\n(by invitation only) \nJoin us for a multi-day zoom and asynchronous Solution Oriented Learning Storylines Writing workshop on the topic of Urban Forestry! \nPEI is looking for a small team of educators with expertise in and a willingness to strengthen their understanding and skills in curriculum development\, climate science solutions\, instructional best practices including formative assessment\, teacher professional development\, Tribal\, rural\, bilingual and migrant education.  \nWhat is a Solutions Oriented Learning Storyline? \nThe project is rooted in rigorous science education while linking to local questions\, problems\, issues and opportunities to engage students that historically have been underserved in science. Three-dimensional storylines with anchoring phenomena\, formative assessments and 7E (engage\, explore\, ecosystem\, elders\, explain -students explain not sages on stages -expand\, and evaluate) activities that build towards performance expectations to ensure 3-dimensional NGSS instruction is taught\, with assessments/rubrics to help teachers determine student growth. The storylines build student understanding and problem solving around local environmental challenges related to food and food sovereignty\, land use and management\, agriculture\, aquaculture\, forestry\, land management and renewable energy. \nOur project intends to provide educators with classroom instructional tools and professional development to effectively teach climate science through storylines. We are focusing the work on six important anchors: \n\nStrategies to work with local tribes to center Indigenous ways of knowing;\n3-D NGSS assessment tools to demonstrate student growth;\nStrategies and tools for formative assessment to strengthen inclusive teacher instruction for all learners;\nLocally\, relevant\, place-based topics;\nLessons to calculate and implement solutions to draw down greenhouse gases; and\nStrategies to elevate student voice.\n\nSynchronous Zoom sessions: \n\nMarch 18\, 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM\nMarch 25\, 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM\nApril 1\, 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM\nApril 8\, 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM\n\nIn addition\, participants will be expected to complete 10 hours asynchronously.  \nAs a classroom teacher you will receive: \n\n$900 stipend for your participation in all sessions and asynchronous work.\n18 STEM clock hours are available.

DESCRIPTION:Project Learning Tree: Outdoor STEM Learning in Your Schoolyard or Home for Grades K-5\n(workshop FULL-waitlist available) \nJoin FieldSTEM Coordinator Karen Lippy from Pacific Education Institute in an online workshop designed to help K-5 educators increase their knowledge\, skills and tools to create impactful science learning opportunities for students in their schoolyard or at home using the Project Learning Tree: PreK-8 Environmental Education Activity Guide.* \nThe workshop will be a blended experience including an online Zoom element and self-paced learning: \n\n\nAsynchronous: prior to first day of workshop (approx. 1 hour) \n\n\nSynchronous: Monday\, November 30\, 2020\, 4 PM to 6 PM (2 hours) \n\n\nSynchronous: Wednesday\, December 2\, 2020\, 4 PM to 6 PM (2 hours) \n\n\nParticipants who complete all asynchronous work and participate in both synchronous sessions will receive 5 STEM clock hours. \nParticipants will: \n\n\nReceive hands-on experience with Project Learning Trees activities and lessons  \n\n\nIdentify activities that align with their grade-level learning standards  \n\n\nExplore strategies to successfully use outdoor spaces on the schoolyard or at home for locally-relevant learning \n\n\n*The Project Learning Tree: PreK-8 Environmental Education Activity Guide is included in the cost of the workshop and will be mailed to you prior to the workshop. \nNote: this workshop is for formal educators of grades K-5. \nRegistration will close on November 18\, 2020 and no refunds will be issued after that date.

FieldDesign is a framework to engage students in engineering practices around real-world problems. Students research and analyze situations on the school grounds\, at home\, or in their communities to give engineering design a more meaningful context. In this virtual workshop\, educators dive in to the FieldDesign framework* and\, with support\, plan for implementation in their own classrooms. \nSynchronous Learning Dates and Times: \n\n\nMonday\, November 16\, 2020\, 4 PM to 6:30 PM (2.5 hours) \n\n\nThursday\, November 19\, 2020\, 4 PM to 6 PM (2 hours) \n\n\nAsynchronous Learning: participants will be required to complete the equivalent of 1.5 hours of work outside of the online workshop.\n \nParticipants who attend all sessions and complete all required work will receive:\n\n\n6 Washington State approved STEM clock hours  \n\n\nA $125 participation stipend \n\n\nPlease note: you must be a formal middle school or high school educator to attend this workshop.\n \n*A FieldDesign guide is available to you as part of this workshop.
