DESCRIPTION:Sustainability Course: Information Session\nAttention Formal High School Educators! \nJoin us to learn more about an exciting nine-week pilot starting in February 2021! The Pacific Education Institute has developed a semester-long course with the purpose of refining students’ critical and creative thinking skills around the complexities of sustainability\, climate change\, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Students will analyze solution trade-offs in terms of people\, planet\, and prosperity\, and complete this course by presenting a climate change solution that includes consideration of all those components\, as well as environmental and/or climate justice. They will communicate the science behind their solution to their peers and/or the public in terms that are understandable and actionable. The course is aligned with NGSS\, Common Core ELA\, and WA State ESE standards. \nWe are looking to form a cohort of 5-6 formal educators\, statewide\, that have the capacity and interest to commit to the professional development\, implementation\, and evaluation of this pilot. Although the course is a semester long\, we will be piloting nine weeks of the curriculum. One payment stipend will be dispersed to each formal educator within the cohort at the completion of the nine-week pilot. \nThese information sessions* on October 13 and 14 are an opportunity for formal high school educators  who are interested in piloting a new Sustainability Course to gain information on the course itself\, requirements of the pilot\, and have any additional questions answered. \n*Educators only need to attend one info session.

DESCRIPTION:Regenerative Agriculture Solutions-Oriented Learning Storyline hosted by ESD 105\nIs it possible to teach climate science in a way that is locally relevant\, solutions-oriented\, connected to indigenous science\, and connected to careers? Who have been\, are\, and will be the local land stewards in my region? What are best practices to draw down carbon from the atmosphere while simultaneously producing food industrially? How will the Regenerative Agriculture Climate Solution Storyline look in my classroom? These questions will be answered in a 6 hour course called Regenerative Agriculture Solutions-Oriented Learning Storyline for ESD105. The Pacific Education Institute (PEI) in partnership with ESD 105 will guide participants in exploring the role of the regenerative agriculture in Washington’s key industry and its contribution to climate resiliency. Participants will engage with the solutions-oriented learning storyline format\, which includes: local anchoring phenomena\, culturally responsive practices tied to Since Time Immemorial\, and NGSS three-dimensional formative assessment. 5th\, MS\, and HS grade levels are encouraged to attend. \nImportant Session Information:\nThe course will be delivered in two 2-hour synchronous (Zoom) sessions separated by 2 hours of asynchronous learning (Google Classroom).

DESCRIPTION:Investigating Invasive Species with Washington Pest Watch for Upper Elementary\n(This workshop is FULL) \nAttention all 3rd through 5th grade formal educators interested in learning about invasive species! \nScotch broom\, mussels\, and beetles – oh my! Washington is being invaded! With Pacific Education Institute and the Washington Invasive Species Council\, you can become familiar with a state-wide citizen science project that empowers students to identify and report invasive species in their schoolyards and neighborhoods and become “first detectors.” In this online workshop\, we will introduce formal educators of grades 3 through 5 to the free Washington Pest Watch curriculum\, modeling the use of some resources to help support this kind of work in distance or hybrid K-12 learning models. DESCRIPTION:Healthy Ocean\, Healthy You (Online Ocean Science Workshop)\n(By Invitation Only) \nJoin PEI and the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary for a three-day online exploration of the benefits of our oceans. This workshop for formal K-12 educators will expand on the ideas presented in a new\, upcoming ELA performance task for grades 4-6\, “Ocean Benefits.” \nWe will look at economics\, habitat\, and recreation\, and how healthy oceans support all of these\, which in turn helps to keep us healthy. (Ocean Literacy Principle #6: The Ocean and Humans are Inextricably Connected.)  This workshop will be hosted on the Go-To* platform and will include synchronous and asynchronous components (including some pre-work due before the workshop.) \nAt this workshop you can expect to: \n\nspend some time outside conducting a field investigation\nlearn from members of the community about their connection to the ocean\nspend some time planning how you will integrate this new material into your Ocean Science Program\n\nUpon completion\, you will receive: \n\n10 STEM Clock Hours\n$150 participation stipend\n\n
