SUMMARY:Ocean Science: Engineering Solutions for a Changing Environment
DESCRIPTION:The theme of this year’s Ocean Science Workshop is “Engineering Solutions for a Changing Environment.” We will model the use of PEI’s project-based learning model to guide participants in learning about the effects of ocean acidification and in conducting experiments to identify possible solutions. \nWhat you will gain from this workshop: \n• Introduction to teaching engineering concepts using the Project Based Learning Model \n• Introduction to the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on intertidal invertebrates \n• Overview of Marine Food Web\, and introduction to Olympic Coast Food Web Curriculum \n• Review of the role that Marine Protected Areas play in contributing to ocean health \n• Field investigations to observe the ecosystem and learn more about the problem of OA \n• Meeting with stakeholders to learn more about the effects of OA on human needs \n• Proposing and testing possible solutions to the issue of OA on intertidal invertebrates \n• Planning time for integrating the project-based learning model into your curriculum \nThis workshop utilizes the fact that the OCNMS is the perfect outdoor classroom for investigating ocean health. You will explore intertidal zones in the Sanctuary\, gaining first-hand knowledge of the composition of the intertidal communities while searching for evidence of problems or issues caused by the increase in OA. \n*Participants are eligible to earn 27 Washington State Approved STEM Clock Hours* \n\nRegistration Information: Registration is Closed \nThis workshop is designed for teachers of grades 4-6 from the outer coast Counties (Clallam\, Jefferson\, Grays Harbor\, Pacific\, and Wahkiakum) who participate in the Sanctuary’s Ocean Science Program.  \n\n

DESCRIPTION:The theme of this year’s Ocean Science Workshop is “Engineering Solutions for a Changing Environment.” We will model the use of PEI’s project-based learning model to guide participants in learning about the effects of ocean acidification and in conducting experiments to identify possible solutions. \nWhat you will gain from this workshop: \n• Introduction to teaching engineering concepts using the Project Based Learning Model \n• Introduction to the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on intertidal invertebrates \n• Overview of Marine Food Web\, and introduction to Olympic Coast Food Web Curriculum \n• Review of the role that Marine Protected Areas play in contributing to ocean health \n• Field investigations to observe the ecosystem and learn more about the problem of OA \n• Meeting with stakeholders to learn more about the effects of OA on human needs \n• Proposing and testing possible solutions to the issue of OA on intertidal invertebrates \n• Planning time for integrating the project-based learning model into your curriculum \nThis workshop utilizes the fact that the OCNMS is the perfect outdoor classroom for investigating ocean health. You will explore intertidal zones in the Sanctuary\, gaining first-hand knowledge of the composition of the intertidal communities while searching for evidence of problems or issues caused by the increase in OA. \n*Participants are eligible to earn 27 Washington State Approved STEM Clock Hours* \n\nRegistration Information: Registration is Closed \nThis workshop is designed for teachers of grades 4-6 from the outer coast Counties (Clallam\, Jefferson\, Grays Harbor\, Pacific\, and Wahkiakum) who participate in the Sanctuary’s Ocean Science Program.  \n\n
