DESCRIPTION:Please note that funding for the GHMRC Summer FieldSTEM Institute comes from the Grays Harbor and Pacific County MRCs\, and is limited to elementary school teachers (grades 4-6) from those counties. \n\nGrays Harbor MRC (GHMRC) and the Pacific Education Institute (PEI) are excited to announce the GHMRC Summer FieldSTEM Institute. Join us at Grays Harbor College for a three-day immersion in the Ocean Literacy Principle 6\, “The Ocean and Humans Are Inextricably Interconnected.” \nUsing PEI’s Field Investigations and Designing High Impact Field Experiences guides as a framework\, participants will experience a combination of classroom learning and field experiences while they explore and investigate the concepts of ocean acidification and harmful algal blooms. Field experiences will be “feet in the mud” and “hands-on\,” so you will need to bring your waterproof boots and weather-appropriate clothing. \nThe Institute will wrap up with a panel discussion and networking session with community members working in local natural resources\, agriculture and other outdoor/environmental fields. \nThese panelists will: \n\nHelp participants gain a better understanding of the issues\nProvide potential stakeholders for their students to learn from\nGive participants a better understanding of some of the FieldSTEM careers available in our region\nProvide potential partners for future collaborations.\n\n\nFormal Educators can earn 18 Washington State Approved STEM Clock Hours – at no cost! \nTeachers who meet the criteria are eligible to earn a $200 Implementation Stipend through their MRC —details provided at the workshop. \nFor elementary school teachers (grades 4-6) from Grays Harbor County or Pacific County. Register here! \n

We will create performance tasks as instructional tools that integrate science and English Language Arts. The focus will be to explicitly practice the research and writing standards that are part of the ELA Common Core expectations. \nParticipants will: \n\nFocus on research methodologies\, finding reputable sources\, and best-practices\nLink performance task content to regional environmental\, agricultural and natural resource sectors\nDevelop and write your own performance task with guidance from PEI faculty and peers\nBe eligible to receive $150 participation stipend\n\nEducators that develop and implement a performance task will be eligible for an additional $150 implementation stipend! (Details will be provided at the workshop). \nParticipants will receive 18 Washington State Approved Clock Hours—at no charge! \nRegister today!
