SUMMARY:Project Learning Tree (PLT): Forests and Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested in learning about the role forests play in climate change?  \nDo you want to know how hands-on learning can increase student success and engagement across content areas?  \nJoin PEI Faculty\, Karen Lippy to learn skills and activities on the topic of Forests and Climate Change\, as required by the Next Generation Science Standards. The “Teaching with i-Tree” Unit from Project Learning Tree (PLT) will be used to provide participants with hands-on activities that help middle and high school students discover and analyze the many ecosystem services trees provide. The “Southeastern Forests and Climate Change” guide will be used to build on concepts about climate\, the forest carbon cycle\, carbon sequestration\, and forest ecosystems.  \nEducators will receive:  \n\nLessons that can be incorporated into existing curriculum or non-formal education programs\nAccess to PLT’s Teaching with i-Tree (created by the US Forest Service) \nAccess to PLT’s Southeastern Forests and Climate Change guide \n6 Washington State approved STEM Clock Hours \n$100 participation stipend (must attend full 6 hours) \n\nInterested? SUMMARY:Energy in Ecosystems -Project Learning Tree e-Unit Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Updated 10/25/17: This workshop has been canceled.  \nPlease stay connected with us\, as this workshop may be offered again in 2018. \nTo bring this workshop to your school or district\, contact Denise Buck\, Program Director dbuck@pacificeducationinstitute.org or 360-705-9286 \n\nDesigned for students in grades 3-5\, Energy in Ecosystems investigates the ways in which organisms depend on each other to survive and thrive. Students focus on forests—one of the largest and most complex types of ecosystems—and come to understand some of the interactions present in all ecosystems. In doing so\, they learn to appreciate the natural systems on which we depend. \nMost importantly\, activities are: \n• Constructed around – rather than simply correlated to – targeted performance expectations of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). \n• Aligned with the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Math \n• Aligned with the College\, Career\, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies \n• Organized around the 5E Instructional Model – engage\, explore\, explain\, elaborate\, and evaluate.  \n  \nParticipants will receive: \n\n\nIn-person training \n\n\nThe PLT E-unit Energy in Ecosystems \n\n\n6 Washington State Approved STEM Clock Hours \n\n\nPlanning time \n\n\nPlease come dressed for the weather and bring your own lunch. \nPlease note: it is very important for participants to bring a laptop to this workshop. \nAudience: Formal Educators K-12 \n\n
