FieldSTEM in Action
2021 FieldSTEM Celebration Honors PEI Educators, Partners and Advocates
|
|
Across Washington State, teachers, administrators, and community partners are bringing FieldSTEM to life in classrooms, schools, and outdoor spaces. On November 10 PEI celebrated those efforts at a virtual FieldSTEM Celebration which also honored amazing individuals and organizations who have been strong advocates of our work. The online ceremony featured awards in six categories, with highlights and videos from each winner.

Dawkins Charitable Trust
|
|
For the past six years, the Dawkins Charitable Trust has been one of PEI’s strongest supporters, providing funds for our work with conservation districts, land trusts and school districts throughout the Puget Sound region. This year they’ve gone a step further. In addition to funding FieldSTEM, they’re supporting stipends to enable low-income high school students to participate in the Youth Engaged in Sustainable Systems (YESS) program. These stipends make it possible for students who would otherwise have to work during the summer months to simultaneously gain valuable skills and high school credit.
Dawkins serves Puget Sound nonprofits that assist youth, animals, and environmental issues. Their goals are improving the sustainability and success of small local organizations and increasing collaboration among nonprofits. Each year they distribute over $1 million to support issues they care about, making the work of dozens of local organizations possible. PEI appreciates the Dawkins trustees’ vision and commitment to making a difference.
The Dawkins Charitable Trust also supports the Community Foundation of South Puget Sound’s Give Local campaign with a monetary match for all donations.

Fostering Outdoor Observation Skills

PEI is using a new delivery format for professional learning this year. Each FieldSTEM workshop begins with a 2-hour virtual, state-wide convening followed by asynchronous assignments, and ending with a 2-hour virtual regional session. This format allows us to reach a large state-wide audience while also creating an opportunity for coordinators to address the specific needs of the educators in their regions.

PEI Team Highlights
Welcome our new Legislative Liaison!
|
|
We would like to introduce Nora Pallatao Burnes, PEI’s new Legislative Liaison.
Nora is the principal of Palattao Burnes Strategies. Prior to founding her firm, Nora worked as a lobbyist for Stauffacher Communications representing businesses and trade associations.
Nora was the top aide to former Speaker of the House Frank Chopp and worked for former Democratic Caucus Chair Representative Eric Pettigrew (Retired), and former Representative Christine Kilduff, who is now the House Speaker’s attorney. A graduate of the University of Washington with a BA in Philosophy and Military Science and Leadership, Nora has served for 15 years in the US Army and is currently an officer in the Army Reserve. She is pursuing a Masters of Business Administration at Washington State University.
Nora’s unique background and energy will complement the Board’s legislative connections and continue our work to cultivate solid relationships with legislators on both sides of the aisle. Nora has established herself as trustworthy and tenacious and has proven her ability to get results in the legislative environment.
Please join us in welcoming Nora to our team!
