New Year, New Economy
PEI’s YESS Program Forges Career Pathways for Economically Disadvantaged High School Students
As the new year begins, green jobs are part of a growing conversation around how to create a sustainable economy. Preparing K-12 students for these jobs is essential, but for high school students with packed academic schedules, providing green jobs training has been a challenge. Economically disadvantaged students are even less likely to pursue such pathways, given their need to work during the summer. Few paid opportunities for both training and academic credit have existed - until now.

Honoring Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy
PEI Staff Engage in Day of Service
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
– Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Monday, January 17, was the federal holiday recognizing Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. Many Americans took that day to honor and celebrate his legacy. PEI began a new holiday policy in 2022 allowing staff to choose their own holidays based on personal significance to them. Some staff chose to take Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a holiday and spend time with family or community, or for personal reflection. Others chose to answer the question “What am I doing for others?” with action and spent the day in service to community. Here are a few moments we captured.

Karen Lippy, West Sound FieldSTEM Coordinator for Pacific Education Institute led the workshop “Designing High Impact Field Experiences” (HIFEs) and before the workshop ended, teachers began asking her for a way to share projects and ideas, regardless of their region.
