PEI Staff Bring Learning Standards to Life at Outdoor School for All Training
The word ‘fun’ doesn’t leap to mind when considering educational standards. Hitting Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) is challenging enough. Add Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) targets, Environmental and Sustainability Education (ESE) standards and Culturally Responsive Teaching principles and educators may be forgiven for wanting to throw in the towel.
That’s what made one presentation at the Outdoor School for All fall training so memorable.

How Administrative Support Magnifies the Impact of Outdoor Education
Aside from the fact that all three are elementary school teachers, Brittany Moore, Caris Ristoff and Roxann Stewart have two other points in common. All have attended at least one PEI workshop and each benefit from supportive school leadership that supports their outdoor-based learning efforts.
“When you have a good idea and you’re looking at resources and get excited, there’s nothing worse than to feel like you can’t do it,” says Moore, who teaches an integrated block of science, engineering, writing and social studies to all 4th-grade students at Brownsville Elementary School in the Central Kitsap School District. “It’s really nice to have an administrator say, ‘You need to take three hours of release time on this day to work on planning and implementation. Here you go.’ Administrative support is extremely important to the success of outdoor education.”

Explore the Salish Sea Moves to PEI
When SeaDoc Society announced the move of their Explore the Salish Sea 5th grade curriculum, PEI rose to the top of the list of wonderful environmental education innovators who put in their bids.
Explore the Salish Sea fits right in with our place- and project-based learning model, setting up kids as Nature Detectives to solve mysteries about the great estuary we share with Canada and 61 Indigenous sovereign nations. We are now working with its curator, Mira Lutz, to update the links and lessons that make this a relevant, living resource that can be customized to meet each teacher's science or integrated subjects learning goals.
