New Asynchronous Course Lets Teachers Explore FieldSTEM at Their Own Pace
Time is one of the most precious resources teachers have and there never seems to be enough of it. For those who want to pursue further training through a workshop, finding the time to do it can be a challenge. With that in mind, several members of PEI’s staff have collaborated to develop an asynchronous Introduction to FieldSTEM course that can be completed any time before May 31st. What would normally be a six-hour workshop can now be accomplished at a pace that meets individual educators’ needs.

Hands-On Learning is Key at Explore the Salish Sea Workshops
You know an event was successful if people are disappointed when it’s over. When PEI’s Explore the Salish Sea workshop wrapped up on February 11th, participants weren’t ready for it to end. “No one wanted to leave,” says Daniel Cuevas, PEI’s East Sound South FieldSTEM Coordinator. “We were at a park, looking at bugs and learning how to use interesting scientific equipment. Black Faces in Green Spaces
Check out this great - and free! - new resource for teachers. Black Faces in Green Spaces: The Journeys of Black Professionals in Green Careers is a guide highlighting 22 Black Americans who share their personal stories about finding their passions and overcoming challenges and offer advice to the next generation about exploring their own careers in the forest and conservation sector. The project was overseen by Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Project Learning Tree and the Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences Advisory Committee and black-owned businesses were hired as consultants, designers, content writers, and photographers. This guide is an excellent way to help young Black students explore career paths in the forest and conservation sector.

Special Event
Thank You Student Summit Sponsors
Thank you to our sponsors for the scheduled February 23 Environmental & Sustainability Literacy Student Summit: The Connell Family, SCJ Alliance and Evrnu. We regrettably had to cancel the event due to weather that led to multiple school district closures and made travel a challenge for the 18 participating students groups from around the state. We expect to reschedule the event for April or May. If you would like to join our existing sponsors and support this event, contact Heidi Smith at [email protected]

Why PEI: My experience as the recruiter for The McGregor Company and supporter of getting more agriculture-focused learning into the K-12 system made joining the board an easy choice. PEI is a great fit because it allowed me to have an impact on classrooms across the state.
