Aquaculture and Fisheries Writing Team Bonds Through – What Else? Getting Wet

There’s nothing like a good torrential downpour to bond a newly formed team.

When the skies opened during a group visit to a local oyster farm, it broke the ice among the diverse crew assembled by PEI to write a statewide Career and Technical Education (CTE) framework for the aquaculture and fisheries industry.

“There is often a field trip involved with these writing workshops, not only because it informs the work but because it increases collegiality among our writers,” says PEI’s Project Specialist Michelle Townshend. “This is a creative process and there has to be a modicum of trust. Standing outside during a rainstorm was a great way to bond.”

Workshops Connect Tribal Schools and Project Learning Tree Resources

If classrooms won prizes for the most outstanding fragrance, the outdoor education room at Paschal Sherman Indian School would be a frontrunner. It’s where students and staff process the traditional native foods they’ve harvested and the resulting aroma is one of the first things to strike visitors.

“It smells so good,” says PEI Associate Director, Columbia Basin & Coast Megan Rivard. “The space is so calming and healing. You can tell that it’s such a passion of this group of educators to connect their students to this place and to the other organisms that share it.”

Thank You Legislators and PEI Supporters!

House Votes in Favor of FieldSTEM Budget Amendment

Great news! It’s celebration time at PEI with the passage of the 2024 legislative budget. The legislature approved Representative Reeve’s amendment to Section 522(3)(j) which means a substantial increase in funding to support FieldSTEM in the coming year.

We are so thankful for the many board members, staff, community partners and PEI supporters throughout the state who signed on to support the amendment and wrote to their legislators – and to the legislators who voted for it. You shared the value of our work and that made a difference.

This funding allows us to continue critical work with educators, providing them with tools for getting students outdoors and connecting with local partners to make learning rich, relevant and engaging for all students. It also means we can continue to reach teachers and students in some of our state’s most remote and underserved communities.

Tools & Tips for Teachers

Digital Tools to Connect Your Students to Wildlife

One of the best ways to ensure future generations can enjoy our planet’s rich biodiversity is to raise awareness about the importance of conserving our natural world. World Wildlife Day aims to make that happen with an annual day of observance and call for wildlife conservation and education.

This year’s theme, “Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation,” is a great avenue for middle and high school students to get involved. Most children already gravitate toward animals at a young age. It can be tougher to get older students interested in conservation topics, but pairing wildlife with technology is an easy win.

This guide looks at apps and other digital resources to connect, educate, and inspire older students about not only World Wildlife Day, but wildlife conservation as an important goal.
