Hi <<First Name>>,

February was a busy month with the start of the legislative session, professional learning workshops, and celebrating Black History Month. Check out what we have been up to below.

Advocate for FieldSTEM

PEI and the legislative session

We are asking our partners across the state to support our efforts to increase the funding available to PEI through the FieldSTEM proviso. The funds we receive are critical to the work we do to support school districts’ professional learning related to FieldSTEM implementation.

The House Appropriations and the Senate Ways and Means Committees are beginning budget conversations now. It is important that the House Appropriations Committee members and the Senate Ways and Means Committee hear from their constituents about the value of PEI’s work in their districts. If you're interested in supporting PEI through this process, please send your representative a request to support the increase.

Implementing FieldSTEM

Shelton School District

PEI supports educators to implement the FieldSTEM model in their classrooms, schools, and districts. As school districts engage their students in integrated, locally relevant, career connected learning they progress along the FieldSTEM District Implementation Continuum from an ’exploring’ to an ‘emerging' district, and then to a district of ‘implementing with excellence.’ Shelton School District exemplifies this last category with 100% schools engaged.

Featured lesson

Toad Abodes

Looking for something fun and challenging? Check out PEI’s Toad Abodes, a Schoolyard Investigation written for 2nd graders in both English and Spanish. Harness their enthusiasm and engage them with the beloved classic, Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel, to build science skills and knowledge. Students use scientific and engineering practices to design, build and test a rain proof toad abode using materials they can find in their schoolyard or backyard.

Celebrating Black History

Pacific Education Institute is excited to be part of the Thurston ECO Network’s DEI Subcommittee. To celebrate Black History Month the committee created BRAIN STEM Heroes profiles, wrote an informative article and are hosting a virtual salmon talk with local Black biologist Marisa Litz on February 25th at 5:30.
