What is outdoor school?

  • Develops and supports outdoor learning opportunities for 5th and 6th-grade students in Washington public schools, with related opportunities for high school students to volunteer as counselors.
  • Provides hands-on learning experiences that are three to five days in duration and up to four nights
  • Residential or day programs
  • Focus on environmental education aligned with the Washington state learning standards and the development of social and emotional learning skills

Who is Outdoor Schools Washington (OSW)?

OSW makes possible overnight, outdoor education experiences for each and every 5th and 6th grade public school student in Washington that are high-quality, robust, and enduring learning experiences tied to classroom science education and include an interdisciplinary approach aligned with Washington State Learning Standards. OSW provides funding, training, and mentorship for sites, schools, and collaborative outdoor school programs and welcomes those interested in starting a new program.OSW published the Characteristics of a High Quality Outdoor School (CHQOS), a learning tool to support programs pursuing eventual Washington State outdoor school accreditation.
